CNN says that in total, the fires caused 150,000 Californians to be evacuated from their homes last night.

Wildfires raging west of Los Angeles have forced school closures.

Malibu and nearby Calabasas are home to hundreds of celebrities and entertainment executives attracted by its ocean views, rolling hills and large, isolated estates.

Strong wind is blowing two brush fires out of control in Ventura County, and one of them has closed a section of Highway 101.

One of the fires broke out Thursday north-west of Los Angeles and roared south, jumping the USA 101 freeway early Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains. The highway is expected to remain closed Friday morning, Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said. "I just had to evacuate my home from the fires".

And in part of Malibu itself - a city of about 12,000 people known for beachside homes owned by celebrities and millionaires - a voluntary evacuation advisory was issued Friday morning.

She added another message giving her thanks to firefighters, writing 'Fire Fighters, I love you and thank you for doing all that you can to keep us safe!'

The Woolsey Fire broke out about 2:25 p.m. Thursday, pushed by strong Santa Ana winds which prevented fire commanders from ordering aerial assaults in the early morning hours.

The full extent of the destruction is still unknown, but authorities believe up to 1,000 structures have been destroyed - most of those in Paradise, a town of 26,000 people about 85 miles north of Sacramento, a Cal Fire spokesman said.

He said: "The town is devastated, everything is destroyed".

"There was really no firefight involved", said Capt. Scott McLean of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, explaining that crews gave up on attacking the flames and instead helped people evacuate. "This fire moved so fast and grew so fast a lot of people got caught by it".

TMZ also reported later in the day that flames have made their way to Kardashian and husband Kanye West's home.

Accidents gridlocked routes out of the town and residents abandoned their cars and fled on foot carrying children and pets, Reuters quoted local officials as saying. One woman stuck in traffic went into labour, the Enterprise-Record newspaper reported. "All residents, from Ventura County Line to the area of the Getty Villa and the Ventura (101) Freeway to the ocean, must evacuate as soon as possible".

The hospital was totally destroyed, Mike Mangas, a spokesman for operator Dignity Health, told Action News Now. By 9 a.m. Friday, CalFire said it had burned 6,000 acres. That helped double the size of the Woolsey Fire to 8 000 acres (3238 hectares), fire officials said.
