Wildfires near Thousand Oaks, California put 75000 homes under evacuation orders


Overnight, the so-called Woolsey Fire reached the city of Agoura Hills and raced through Oak Park, in the adjacent Ventura County.

Another blaze just west of that area, dubbed the Hill Fire, topped 10,000 acres on Thursday.

Unfortunately, Scott Derrickson, best known for directing Doctor Strange, announced on Twitter early this morning that his home has been lost in the fire.

Residents of the beachside city of Malibu have been ordered to evacuate as three fast-moving wildfires raged in California on Friday morning, including one that also spurred the evacuation of 75,000 homes near a city that was still reeling from a mass shooting.

Heavy smoke and strong winds hampered visibility for crews on the firelines and residents trying to evacuate fire zones. Thousands evacuated, many abandoned their vehicles and fleeing on foot as flames surrounded major roadways in the area. An emergency evacuation order was issued for several neighborhoods west of Los Angeles as firefighters frantically fought back the Woolsey Fire.

The 20,000 acre (8,100 hectare) Camp Fire, which started on Thursday near Camp Creek, is being driven west by 35 miles per hour (56 kmh) winds, fire officials said.

The full extent of the destruction is still unknown, but authorities believe up to 1,000 buildings have been destroyed - most of those in Paradise, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) spokesman said.

The 101 Freeway is closed in both directions as more than 165 firefighters battle the flames. Approximately 75,000 homes are under evacuation orders along the Ventura-Los Angeles border.

The flames are now threatening coastal areas further south, fire officials said.

"La County Fire Department tweeted: "*URGENT SAFETY MESSAGE* Fire has jumped the 101 fwy near Chesebro and is headed to Ocean Mandatory Evacuations, 101 Fwy to the coast between Las Virgenes Cyn /Malibu Cyn Rd.to the LA County line.

Zoo staff have begun to evacuate some animals - starting with the lemurs - but the fire has not spread as fast as the Malibu blaze due to lighter winds. Murphy says firefighters were able to stop the fire at the edge of the city, where evacuation orders remained in place. It's near Hill Canyon Road and Santa Rosa Road in the Santa Rosa Valley.

Fire officials ordered the evacuation of large swaths of the beachside city of Malibu Friday as a raging fire jumped the US 101 Freeway west of Los Angeles and raced toward the sea and the community famed for its surf and celebrity homes.

The latest numbers estimate the Hill fire has burned over 10,000 acres. It's already burned dozens of homes and threatens 30,000 more.

Evacuations in Hidden Hills and all portions in the City of Los Angeles have been revised from mandatory to voluntary, the Fire Department stated.

Taft High School and Pierce College are open to people in Los Angeles County.
