Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker Once Expressed Terrifying View Of Executive Power

Following Attorney General Jeff Sessions' resignation, requested by the president earlier this week, there has been a lot of concern from the left about his replacement, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker. Trump, who denies any collusion, has long complained about the probe, calling it a witch-hunt.

More important for the president, Whitaker "would assume final decision-making authority over the special counsel probe instead of Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein", the Post said. He called Trump's recent actions "a rerun of the 'Saturday Night Massacre, ' " a reference to the October 20, 1973 resignations of the attorney general and deputy attorney general after each refused an order by President Richard Nixon to fire Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox.

"It's pretty clear the president wanted to make a change and it occurred after the election". Federal prosecutors have said in court papers that the case involves numerous "uncharged" third parties and have argued against disclosing search warrants and other documents that would "certainly result in a very public guessing game" about their identities.

"Since the day I was honored to be sworn in as attorney general of the United States, I came to work at the Department of Justice every day determined to do my duty and serve my country", Sessions wrote. Christie visited the White House Thursday and met with Mr. Trump's son-in-law and top aide Jared Kushner, whose father he sent to prison while Christie was a US attorney.

The AP reported that the resignation "was the culmination of a toxic relationship" between Sessions and Trump based on a few factors, but largely Session's having recused himself from dealing with Mueller's probe. The Nobody Is Above the Law network demands that Whitaker immediately commit not to assume supervision of the investigation.
