Islamic Jihad announces Gaza ceasefire with Israel

Two other names of Palestinian victims are already known: 22-year-old Ahmed Said Abu Libdah and 23-year-old Aish Sha'ath, who were both hit by Israel army fire during protests east of Khan Yunis.

He said Islamic Jihad would remain committed to the ceasefire as long as Israel did likewise.

"The Islamic Jihad will abide by the ceasefire if the occupation (Israel) does the same". "We know that the orders, incentives were given from Damascus with the clear involvement of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force".

"Over the night, we have passed those messages to the relevant parties, and I'd emphasize and say that our response is not limited geographically", Conricus said in a briefing to reporters Saturday morning.

The Islamic Jihad group, a militant faction operating in the Hamas-ruled Gaza but that has close ties to Iran and Syria, said they agreed to Egyptian mediation efforts and halted the rocket fire, the heaviest to emanate from Gaza in months.

Earlier on Saturday, Israeli warplanes carried out 91 airstrikes across Gaza "in response" to about 34 rockets fired from Gaza into Israel, of which 17 were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system, according to a statement by the Israeli army.

The strikes came in response to about 30 rockets which were fired into Israel.

Yesterday, six Palestinians died in renewed clashes on the Gaza-Israel border, while Hamas said Egypt was seeking to negotiate a return to calm.

Zionist Union MK Salah Saad invited Gaza border communities residents to "leave behind the rockets and the air sirens and reach Beit Jann", the Druze village Saad hails from and still lives in today.

The Hamas-led weekly protests along the Israeli border have been aimed in large part at breaking the blockade, which has devastated the Gaza economy.

The protesters are calling to be allowed to return to lands their families fled or were expelled from in a 1948 war surrounding the creation of Israel and which are now inside the Jewish state.

Israel rarely acknowledges it has reached a truce with Gaza's militant groups, which it designates as terrorist organisations. COGAT, the Israeli defense body that handles Palestinian civilian issues, said one of the rockets hit an ambulance crossing used to transfer Gazans out of the strip in emergency humanitarian cases.

Five Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli fire in separate incidents along the border fence, the Gaza health ministry said.

About 2 million Palestinians are packed into the Gaza Strip, which is in a deep economic crisis.

Israel has struck scores of times inside Syria during the seven-year civil war there, at what it has said were Iranian targets or Teheran's transfers of weapons to Hezbollah fighters.

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians broke down in 2014.
