Monday still remains near 80 under mostly sunny skies before the remnants of Florence slides in ahead of a cold front by Tuesday.

Storm Helene is heading towards the UK from the Atlantic and is separate from Hurricaine Florence, which is starting to hit the eastern United States.

Florence is now 485 miles from Wilmington, North Carolina.

Residents especially those in flood and landslide prone areas are to be vigilant; and small craft operators and sea bathers are advised to exercise caution due to locally rough seas.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa said he hoped the effects of the storm would be limited.

Preparing for the worst, about 9,700 National Guard troops and civilians were deployed with high-water vehicles, helicopters and boats.

Charley English of the American Red Cross said anyone wondering how to help from afar can donate blood, registering first at their local Red Cross websites.

Well, mostly those living in the south coast of the country.

The Wilmington airport had a wind gust clocked at 105 miles per hour (169 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958.

Key quotes from Woodward book, NYT op-ed assailing Trump
The President believes the rapid response to the book has been handled poorly and he blames Shine for that. Almost every Cabinet member issued a statement or told reporters that they didn't pen the op-ed.

"Areas of low pressure containing what's left of Storm Helene will still provide moisture and energy which will impact the United Kingdom quite a bit as we go into the early part of next week".

According to analytics firm CoreLogic, the hurricane could wreak more than $170billion (£130billion) in havoc and damage almost 759,000 homes and businesses. The island's power grid remains fragile, and almost 60,000 homes still have makeshift roofs not capable of withstanding a Category 1 storm.

That's more than eight stories tall, for reference.

The center of the eye of the hurricane made landfall in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, and was moving slowly westward just south of Wilmington. Of course, the size and strength of the storm surge depends on the size and strength of the hurricane-but Hurricane Florence is absolutely massive, and its storm surge is likely to be on the same scale.

NOAA's National Hurricane Center issued a Public Advisory at 5 a.m.

"Regardless of development, heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected across portions of northeastern Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana on Friday and Saturday", the hurricane center said. The primary concern in the short term is Hurricane Florence. Maximum sustained winds Friday morning were near 35 miles per hour with higher gusts.

An additional three feet of water would bring the storm surge to 6 feet high, potentially destroying homes along the coastline.

In Jacksonville, North Carolina, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door-to-door to pull dozens of people out of the Triangle Motor Inn after the structure began to crumble and the roof started to collapse.

A Tropical Storm Watch which had been issued for St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Barbuda and Antigua was also expected to be discontinued by Thursday evening.
