Beating Serena Williams triggers advertising jackpot for Naomi Osaka

Beating Serena Williams triggers advertising jackpot for Naomi Osaka

Despite US players and captain Jim Courier declaring they have no issues with Ramos umpiring their matches, Adams can't be thrilled about facing Ramos so soon after siding with Williams in the wake of the US Open women's final.

The verbal abuse violation came after Williams took shots at him, calling him a "liar" and a "thief".

When Williams got in Ramos' face and told him, "You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live", it is the greatest tennis player ever borderline-bullying an expendable official. During the ESPN broadcast of the trophy ceremony, Williams tried to quiet the racuous, booing crowd of 20,000-plus and put her arm around Osaka.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) also supported Williams' claims, while Billie Jean King, founder of the WTA and victor of 12 grand slam singles titles, told CNN Tuesday that though Williams was "out of line", Ramos had aggravated the situation.

"I saw how Serena was being treated, and then I thought about coming back to my locker one day as a player, and there was [a reporter] in my chair", said Aaron, who endured racist taunts and death threats as he marched toward Babe Ruth's record. Williams was already down, and ultimately lost the final. The US Open fined Williams for her three code violations.

William's message wasn't the only discussion that DeGeneres and Osaka talked about in the episode.

Tennis Umpires Fear 'No One Has Their Back' After Serena Williams Controversy
He has been assigned to officiate the Davis Cup semifinal matches between the United States and host Croatia later this week. Ramos was unable to defend himself over the weekend as the rules prevent umpires from commenting on the matches they oversee.

In addition, Osaka has inked a deal with Nissan that will make the multicultural athlete - the daughter of a Haitian-born father and Japanese mother, raised mainly in the United States - a "brand ambassador" for the Japanese auto maker. Williams believed that Ramos "attacked her character", but she did the same to the official.

Osaka said during the interview that she initially didn't know what was going on because she turned away from the scene as Williams approached Ramos and started yelling.

"I've seen other men call other umpires several things", she said at a news conference. "I'm not going to say, 'Oh, I can't draw that because that's a no-go area.' What does that say about the way the world's going?"

But Ramos has finally broken his silence regarding the backlash, speaking to Portugal's Tribuna Expresso. "It's an unhappy situation but "à la carte" refereeing doesn't exist".

Ramos has said that he is "fine, given the circumstances" days after the match, however. "Don't you worry about me", the 47-year-old is quoted as saying in the newspaper.

Ramos' umpiring career will continue as he is expected to officiate the Davis Cup semifinal matches starting September 14.
