Gary Neville: 'Harry Kane should have been rested'

England avoided a fourth successive defeat with a 1-0 win over Switzerland at the King Power Stadium but Marcus Rashford's goal was one of the few highlights of a forgettable occasion.

Southgate made sure not to say anything that could be perceived as critical of Pep Guardiola, but the England manager believes it is part of a wider problem that is squeezing out some of the country's better players. He's had three days of little training. Since 2015, Kane has played 175 matches. "We think it is important to keep encouraging him to keep running in behind teams with the pace he's got as well".

The Reds travel to Wembley looking to continue their flawless start to the new Premier League season, while Mauricio Pochettino's side will be hoping to bounce back having seen their own spotless start spoiled by Watford in their final game before the global break.

Ramos said it has been an intense first week working with the new coach ahead of their opening Nations League game in League A, Group 4.

Rashford visibly grew in confidence after scoring the goal and Manchester United fans will hope this helps the young striker find form with a busy month of Premier League and Champions League action looming. It is not as straightforward for Pep as: 'Oh, I'll just give Phil a game.' Every decision you make as a manager has a knock-on effect and I understand how complicated that is. Leicester City's Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray have been promoted from the under 21s for Tuesday night's friendly with Switzerland and the pair have limited Premier League experience, though Southgate is truly down to the bare bones - so much so that there is no replacement for the newly-injured Dele Alli.

"He [Rashford] has still played a lot of football, although maybe not the continuous starts and I'm really pleased for him that he leaves England full of confidence". I think they might, at the beginning, let Tottenham come at them a little bit, give them a bit of respect, which is right because Tottenham's home record was great a year ago. We wanted to finish the game strongly. "José [Mourinho] thinks the world of Marcus - he's a huge admirer of him - but he has his job to do".

Rashford subsequently went to Euro 2016 as England's boy wonder but only played a cameo role in that tournament and was then largely a substitute at this summer's World Cup.
