Ex-Trump Campaign Adviser George Papadopoulos Sentenced to 14 Days In Prison

Papadopoulos became the second person to be sentenced to prison in a prosecution brought by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Papdopoulos's lawyer Tom Breen said "the president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever did".

Papadopoulos was arrested more than a year ago and pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about his contacts with several people connected to Russian Federation during the campaign.

At another point, Breen talked about going to the Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Chicago in February 2017 and seeing a picture of Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on the wall. He emphasized that Papadopoulos' lies to investigators came a week after Trump's inauguration, at a time when the onetime policy aide was seeking a senior role in the administration and the president had begun dismissing the Russian Federation investigation as a lie. However, Papadopoulos' mother Kiki told reporters she was satisfied he had received a fair sentence.

"We are very satisfied with the sentence".

"The message is for all of us to check our loyalty, to tell the truth, to help the good guys", Breen said.

"I saw him sitting in one picture at a table with me, that's the only thing I know about him", Trump said, referring to a widely circulated photo of Papadopoulos in a meeting with Trump and several other advisers. "But there is no doubt in my mind that the judge issued what he thought was a very fair sentence".

Papadopoulos told CNN that he hopes to return to politics in the future.

Washington, Sep 8 (UNI) The former Trump adviser whose remarks in a London pub sparked the USA inquiry into possible collusion with Russian Federation has been sentenced to 14 days in jail, said a BBC News report.

At a campaign meeting at the end of March 2016 Papadopoulos told Trump, then-senator and now Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and other campaign officials that he had connections in London that could set up a Trump-Putin meeting ahead of the November election.

She added that she understands their concern about her role as it relates to her husband, but has denied that she has any ties to Russian Federation. Trump tweeted. Senator Mark Warner, the senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which has its own Russian Federation collusion investigation, applauded Mueller's work. He said his client doesn't recall telling anybody connected with the Trump campaign about Mifsud's offer of Clinton dirt. He had discussed with those foreigners the possibility of a foreign trip where Donald Trump could meet Vladimir Putin.

Before the sentencing, Papadopolous made a statement, describing himself as a "patriotic American" who made a mistake by lying to investigators.

Asked if Papadopoulos still remained loyal to Trump, Breen smiled wryly and paused for a beat.

A former adviser to Donald Trump has been jailed after lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "4 days for $28 MILLION - $2 MILLION a day", he wrote on Twitter, an apparent, if inflated, estimation of the Russian Federation investigation's cost. "A great day for America!" he said, unsuprisingly, in a Tweet.

In court filings, Mueller's team claimed Papadopoulos' lies "caused damage" caused damage to the government's Russian collusion investigation.
