Jon Kyl appointed to take John McCain's Senate seat

Political figures were quick to react to the news that former Republican senator Jon Kyl will be filling the Senate seat of late Arizona Sen.

Former senator Jon Kyl will inherit John McCain's seat in the upper chamber.

"John Kyl is a dear friend of mine and John's", she tweeted. John McCain at a memorial service inside the Arizona State Capitol Rotunda on August 29.

Jeff Flake, the other senator from Arizona, offered Kyl his blessing shortly after the news of his appointment made public.

Kyl's entire career in Washington overlapped with McCain's, and he served with the state's senior senator for three terms before stepping down. If Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) doesn't win her Senate election this fall against Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), that leaves the door open for Ducey to then appoint her for the next two years. "John and I served the people of Arizona for almost two decades, and in that spirit, along with Senator [Jeff] Flake, I will do my best to ensure Arizonans are well represented in the Senate". In that cycle, voters will get to decide who fills the remainder of McCain's seat through 2022.

Kyl was appointed by Republican Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey but agreed only to a brief appointment through January 2019. Every single day that Jon Kyl represents #Arizona in the U.S. Senate is a day our state is well-served.

Kyl on Tuesday also explained that he had only met Trump once earlier this year, was in the process of shepherding Trump's Supreme court nominee through the Senate and said the president often jumps into the middle of a fight, very much like McCain did.

Kyl is an experienced foreign policy hand and will be entering a narrowly divided Senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November. Unlike McCain, Kyl is not one to "go off the Republican reservation" and will likely make things better for President Trump as he endeavors to push his legislative agenda through the 115 Congress. "I will miss him as a friend, and a strong force for America and the world", Kyl said. After retiring in 2012 he became a lobbyist for the firm Convington and Burling which represents big players in the pharmaceutical industry according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
