Multiple dead after Greyhound bus slams into semi-truck

Greyhound said the bus was heading from Albuquerque to Phoenix with 47 passengers.

At least seven people have been killed and many more injured after a Greyhound bus was involved in a horrific head-on crash, which saw two vehicles ripped in half.

"The accident happened around 1:30 pm (local time) and the crews have cordoned off westbound I-40 near Thoreau".

"As you can imagine, the scene down there is chaos, so it's going to take investigators quite a while to go through and actually identify who was sitting where and who were the drivers and who were the passengers", said Officer Ray Wilson, a spokesperson for New Mexico State Police.

It smashed into the front of the passenger bus, which had 48 passengers on board.

Boxes of produce - witnesses identified broccoli and cauliflower - were strewn for yards. That appears to have caused the the driver to lose control and sent the truck careening across the median and and into oncoming traffic, where it rammed into the passenger bus.

According to the New Mexico State Police, preliminary information suggested the semi-tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 about 100 miles west of Albuquerque, N.M., when one of its tires blew out. The driver of the truck sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, the state police said.

Officials said they expect the death toll to rise.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team to investigate.

"We are fully cooperating with local authorities and will also complete an investigation of our own", Greyhound spokeswoman Crystal Booker said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone as we continue to give our support to all affected". One patient has since been discharged, according to the hospital, which has not released details about the other patients' conditions. "The remaining three are in satisfactory or serious conditions".

Jones, who has medical training as Navy veteran and volunteer firefighters, said he first tried to get an idea of who was hurt.
