Bill and wife Hillary Clinton also released a joint statement thanking John for his years of service while also sending their love to John's wife Cindy and their family.

Following the news that longtime Arizona senator and Vietnam War veteran John McCain passed away on Saturday, teams and athletes around the state offered their thoughts.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 60 years".

Months before his death, McCain reportedly asked his son-in-law Ben Domenech to "take care of Meghan".

President Donald Trump, who once mocked McCain's war record, said he sent his "deepest sympathies and respect".

During a very emotional time, McCain's daughter, Meghan McCain, took to social media to pay tribute to her father. McCain had been a rare and outspoken Republican critic of Trump, accusing him of "naivete", "egotism" and of sympathizing with autocrats. "The world was a better place with Senator John McCain in it and we all mourn his loss tonight".

"Today we lost an American original", Palin tweeted.

"And to me, he was a friend whom I'll deeply miss. In the thirty-three years we shared together, he raised me, taught me, corrected me, comforted me, encouraged me, and supported me in all things", McCain wrote in her statement, which garnered over 16,000 retweets and 73,000 likes in just over 30 minutes.

He had spent more than three decades in the Senate, looming large in debates over war and peace and the moral direction of the nation.

The family of the six-term USA senator announced on Friday that he had chose to end treatment in his battle against brain cancer, which he had fought against for over a year.
