Following years of drought and a summer of record-breaking heat, enormous tracts of forest, shrub and grassland have become tinder that allows even a small spark to explode into a devouring blaze, authorities said.

Farther south, the Mendocino Complex Fire is threatening more structures. This is happening about 200 miles north of San Francsico.
