Free, open Indo-Pacific means enabling nations protect sovereignty from coercion: Pompeo

Free, open Indo-Pacific means enabling nations protect sovereignty from coercion: Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the Trump administration is seeking partners, not domination, in the Indo-Pacific.

"Our Indo-Pacific vision excludes no nation", Pompeo said in his address to the first Indo-Pacific Business Forum organised by the US Chambers of Commerce.

"These funds represent just a down payment on a new era in USA economic commitment to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region". "We thus have never and will never seek domination in the Indo-Pacific, and we will oppose any country that does", he added.

While the United States has always been a significant economic player in the Asia-Pacific, U.S. policymakers have also long contended with the problem of how to engage economically with the region relative to other key players.

The $113 million in assistance will clearly not scratch the surface of the financing needs in the Indo-Pacific region. This represents a strategic investment in deeper engagement with the Indo-Pacific while growing our own economy and creating jobs at home, the state department said.

"America will be there and American businesses will be there".

"It is a made in China, made for China initiative", Hook said, according to Reuters.

"Access Asia" is a series of 25 trade promotion outreach events in cities across the U.S. that is sequential, multi-year, data and opportunity driven, and optimises USA government resources, it said. He said the United States had committed $113m to new investments in cybersecurity and the digital economy, energy and infrastructure spending.

Meanwhile, about 120 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of Redding, two blazes prompted mandatory evacuations in Mendocino County. At least five people are dead and more than 38,000 people displaced as firefighters work to contain the blaze.

The trilateral pact comes amid rising concerns of Chinese influence throughout the Indo-Pacific through its One Belt, One Road infrastructure initiative.

Labor leader Bill Shorten said the government was just playing catch-up, after "dropping the ball" in the Pacific and eroding its leadership role by slashing overseas aid by nearly $12 billion to its lowest levels in history.

The United States is pursuing bilateral trade agreements in lieu of a regional deal, he said."I know some are wondering about America's role in the region in light of president Trump's decision to pull out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership", he said.

"This is created to provide mechanism that will allow more private-sector funding for the infrastructure projects that countries in this region need", Kirchner said. "We hope they will bring in real money and put forward some concrete measures to promote the welfare of the local people in its real sense", Geng added.

The measures include a US$25 million initial investment to improve digital connectivity in partner countries and to expand opportunities for United States technology exports.

"When we say we want an "open" Indo-Pacific, it means we want all nations to enjoy open access to the seas and the airways".

"The US government's Indo-Pacific initiatives will be shaped by these values and buttressed by partnerships with American companies".

And what is Pompeo's plan to engage regional institutions such as the Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), or the Indian Ocean Rim Association?
