GOP Lawmakers Move to Impeach Rod Rosenstein

The effort of some House conservatives to impeach the deputy attorney general sputtered within Congress on Thursday, but the political story will likely rage on.

"Impeachment is a punishment; it's not a remedy", said House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy, who has led one of several House GOP investigations into the department and has complained of anti-Trump bias.

In fact, Rosenstein has been criticized by some for giving Congress too much access to an ongoing investigation.

Third, Ryan pointed out the "tremendous progress" DOJ has made in turning over the documents.

The representatives argue that the Department of Justice has failed to provide documents and other disclosures demanded by the House.

But Meadows said separately on Thursday that he doesn't intend to give up his push to get more information and more documents from the Justice Department.

Meadows could have forced a vote on impeachment - but had little support in the House.

On Wednesday, Meadows said he could file a privileged motion to force a vote on the resolution to remove Rosenstein from his position.

The White House was ambivalent about whether Trump supported the effort to impeach Rosenstein.

Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself, but as the special counsel investigation heads into its fourteenth month, many GOP lawmakers are pushing for an end to the inquiry.

A Justice Department official said the agency had no comment.

Most recently, lawmakers have focused on what they call Rosenstein's failure to hand over documents or disclose other information as the main reason he must be removed.

And Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, another Florida Republican retiring at the end of the term, said she was opposed to impeaching Rosenstein and thought the broader Republican conference was too. The move comes after months of criticism over how the investigation is being carried out from US President Donald Trump and his allies.

The articles build on some members' stance that the basis for a special-court warrant to track Carter Page, a onetime Trump campaign advisor, was illegitimate, despite the recent disclosure of a declassified version of the application to the FISA court.

"We want to make sure that we get compliance". "I think the American people are exhausted of talk", he said.

After Jordan asked if he had threatened to "subpoena their calls and emails", Rosenstein said, "No, sir, and there's no way to subpoena phone calls", drawing laughs in the hearing room. Rosenstein has overseen the special counsel's probe since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.
