Trump House Allies Move to Impeach Rosenstein

A handful of conservative members of Congress officially introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday in a move that had been threatened for weeks.

Their move came two hours after GOP lawmakers met with Justice Department officials who have been working to provide documents to several congressional committees about decisions made during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"We're exhausted of the Justice Department giving us the finger and not giving us the information we're entitled to to do our constitutional duty", Jordan said on Fox News Wednesday night.

The Justice Department has provided lawmakers with more than 800,000 documents, but Meadows claimed after the meeting that there was still "frustration" with how Rosenstein has handled the oversight requests.

"We are exhausted of the Justice Department giving us the finger and not giving us the information", Jordan added.

A House GOP aide told ABC News Wednesday night that the articles of impeachment were not filed as a "privileged resolution," meaning they can not force a vote on it on the House floor.

In what progressive advocacy groups and House Democrats immediately decried as a "shameless political ploy" aimed at shielding President Donald Trump from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing Russian Federation probe, Reps.

Rosenstein bristled when Jordan, the Ohio Republican, asked him why he was "keeping information from Congress".

"[Rosenstein's] conduct in authorizing the FISA surveillance at issue in the joint congressional investigation makes him a fact witness central to the ongoing investigation of potential FISA abuse", read the articles of impeachment.

The Department of Justice, under the supervision of Mr. Rosenstien, redacted FBI Agent Peter Strzok's personal relationship with FISC Judge Rudolph Contreras.

The House group didn't introduce the measure as "privileged resolution", which would force a vote within a few days.

"This resolution to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein is a direct attack on the Special Counsel's investigation-full stop", the trio wrote. They're angry that the Justice Department hasn't agreed to appoint a second special counsel to investigate the first, in Mueller.

Democrats have criticized the Republican efforts to pressure the Justice Department, saying they are attempts to undermine Mueller's investigation. But with House Speaker Paul Ryan among those opposed, the resolution is unlikely to go as far as a vote.

Meadows and Jordan are leaders of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, a bloc whose members have been among the most persistent critics of Rosenstein.
