Ireland beat Australia to claim Challenge Trophy at Rugby World Cup Sevens

New Zealand, bidding to become the first team in history to claim back-to-back World Cup Sevens crowns, overpowered Russian Federation 29-5 to book their place in the quarter-finals at AT&T Park, home of baseball's San Francisco Giants.

New Zealand are now scheduled to face U.S., the home team having beaten Russian Federation 33-17 in their last eight match.

Earlier, the Black Ferns Sevens had to work right to the final whistle to edge the United States 26-21 in the semi-finals, trailing the hosts 14-12 at half-time.

Against a very experienced and physically imposing Kenyan side, Conroy scored an outstanding hat-trick, backing his sheer speed against the opposition defence in scoring two of his tries.

"The last time we played them, they actually beat us in Paris, so we dare not underestimate them".

The Springbok Women ended in 14th position after losing 22-0 against Brazil in the 13th-place playoff.

Gareth Williams side will be only able to finish a highest position of 11th when they play Canada in their last game. Fiji will play defending World Champions New Zealand, who edged France 12-7. "We're pretty happy with ourselves".

New Zealand men's captain Scott Curry added: "It's awesome to be here in San Francisco. We managed to find a way to win", said New Zealand coach Clark Laidlaw.

Championship quarterfinals: Ireland 0-45 New Zealand, Spain 0-34 Australia, France 24-19 Canada, USA 33-17 Russian Federation.

The Blitzboks have never won in Hong Kong and the World Cup has also eluded them - maybe the time is now for them to break that drought.

The Boks led 7-0 early through a seven pointer from Selvyn Davids, but that was as good as it got as England fought back to win 29-7, after leading 17-7 at halftime.

They later clinched a spot in the Challenge semi-finals after beating Mexico 59-0.

The 24-team men's field has been reduced to quarterfinalists while the 16-team women's tournament will be decided among New Zealand, Australia, the United States and France on Saturday.
