Now Putin admits making a $400m mistake in Helsinki

The tweets came a day after Mr Trump said he had missed out a word when appearing to support Mr Putin's claim that there was no Russian involvement in the 2016 United States presidential election.

TRUMP: My people came to me. they said they think it's Russian Federation.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., told reporters Tuesday that Russian Federation "did meddle with our elections", and said he would consider further sanctions against Moscow.

"I have said that numerous times before, and I would say that is true, yeah", Trump told CBS news when asked if he agrees with the U.S. intelligence assessment that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 elections.

He then veered from his script to hedge on who was responsible for the election interference: "It could be other people also". The encounter, a key element of accusations that Russian Federation helped to elect Trump as USA president, ended in failure after Veselnitskaya said she had no documents proving the money from the tax evasion had gone to Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Trump made no commitments to the Russian leader when Putin raised the idea at a private meeting in Helsinki on Monday and is "going to meet with his team", Sanders said.

Trump met with Putin for three hours Monday before participating in the joint press conference in which Trump did not contest the Russian leader's election meddling denials. "I will say this: I don't see any reason why it would be".

Trump also said he addressed the meddling with Putin in their one-on-one meeting, saying he was "very strong on the fact that we can't have meddling".

"They would rather go to war than see this!" he wrote. "It's called Trump Derangement Syndrome!"

The indicted Russians have also been accused of hacking into the software used by computer companies that run the USA elections. The claims were "an old duck" and a "heap of conspiracy schemes", said Moscow's foreign ministry in a statement .

"We need to be working feverishly here to harden our defenses", Graham said after delivering an impassioned floor speech late Tuesday. "And here we are almost two decades later, and I'm here to say, the warning lights are blinking red again". "The president and his administration are working very hard to ensure that Russian Federation is unable to meddle in our elections, as they have done in the past", she added, insisting she is "interpreting" Trump, not "reversing" him.

On Tuesday, Mr Trump said he had reviewed the transcript and realised he needed to clarify.

Trump's tweet mirrored, nearly word for word, the lines the Paul has been using to defend the president's performance at the summit.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said Trump needed to wake up to Russia's efforts to interfere in American elections. My first question for you, sir, is, who do you believe?

Sanders also addressed how the administration is working to prevent Russian meddling in USA elections in the future.

Two days earlier, Coats was more forceful in his warnings that Russian Federation and other countries would continue their attempts to breach USA systems.

Republican Senator John McCain accused Trump of "playing right into Putin's hands" with the president's comments in a Fox News interview on Tuesday that appeared to question the American commitment to defend all North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

He thinks it's a good thing to get along with the other person that controls that much of the nuclear arsenal across the globe.
