Pacquiao dethrones Lucas Matthysse to claim WBA welterweight title

"Let's see after this fight if Manny Pacquiao can still continue to fight or just focus as a public servant", said Pacquiao, who is on his first term as senator.

Lucas Matthysse offered up no excuses in his one-sided defeat at the hands of Manny Pacquiao, who put on a dominant display to capture the WBA "regular" welterweight title with a seventh round knockout win before a crowd of 15,000 fans at the Axiata Arena in Malaysia.

Looking like the Pacquiao of old, Manny dominated Matthysse, outstriking the Argentinian brawler and scoring a couple of knockdowns in the process.

The 35-year-old Argentine, who came in with a reputation as a big puncher, had no answer to Pacquiao's blistering speed and he dropped again in the fifth.

"We did a good job in training", added Pacquiao. We were not pushing hard, we controlled our pace and ourselves. "He's a great fighter". I lost, but I walk away with my head raised.

However, May is likely to overturn her own decision should the Three Lions reach the final tournament later this week. In 2014, the team didn't even make it out of the group stage.

Pacquiao said he picked Matthysse as his opponent because "he brings action to the ring", which only means plenty of opportunities for him to strike and, possibly, score a victory convincing enough for him to lay down a few more fights down the road before retiring.

He swiftly followed up with a barrage of powerful swinging punches that forced the referee to step in after 2min 38sec of round nine.

"Right now I'm happy to go back to my country to celebrate the victory", he said.

Lu Bin (106.7 pounds) of China takes on Carlos Canizales of Venezuela (106.4 pounds) for his WBA world light flyweight title while two-time world champion Moruthi Mthlane (111.5 pounds) of South Africa battles Muhammad Waseem (111.3 pounds) of Pakistan.

First fight is early at 7 in the morning while the main event is expected to be beamed worldwide at 11 am Kuala Lumpur time.
