Hamilton: Whoever resurfaced Silverstone did the worst job ever

Ferrari landed the first blow in their battle with Mercedes for supremacy at Silverstone after vehicle updates to the SF71-H delivered an immediate on-track improvement.

"Luckily, it doesn't seem to affect us in terms of performance, only the high-speed corners like Turn 9 or Turn 13 are a bit trickier".

"It's a small step in the right direction, but more important was that the balance was there right away and I felt a good rhythm from the start of the day".

He said: "I've booked my day off, next Sunday, I've booked that day off, I'm like 'keep it free because I want to be in Russian Federation for that day, supporting them".

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen finished a close second, with teammate Vettel third against expectations after a grid penalty had demoted him to sixth on the grid. Hamilton is at the sharp end of that task and it is one that will likely go to the wire but at this particular moment at Silverstone he is just enjoying sharing his passion with the fans he loves.

That said, the opening round of the 2019 F1 season will be competing with the FIA World Endurance Championship's 1000 Miles of Sebring that is scheduled to take place between March 13-16, 2018. "You saw there was a touch at Turn 2 with Kimi and a touch at Turn 7". It has a fantastic atmosphere and great fun to drive on this track because it's so fast, the fastest it has ever been. It has to be the best track in the world, it feels like driving a fighter jet around the track. It's true that they are very, very strong around here and you'd expect them to be very strong tomorrow.

Horner said the move to pass Raikkonen was "really brave", while Verstappen's father Jos told Autosport said: "This is Max, and we don't want to see him different. That would be very good news". Top 3 closes the "Red bull" - the Austrians are approaching the Duo leaders. Both Red Bull and Ferrari were quick to take advantage. On lap 53, he pitted again for super-softs, dropping a place to fifth behind Ricciardo, who nearly immediately slowed and stopped. Obviously for me, it sucked on the day, it will probably suck for somebody else at a point in the season, but I just think that all these things are unnecessary.

With Silverstone basking in unusually hot weather, Ricciardo added: "Managing the temperatures will be key to having a better race vehicle". The Ferraris are really fast.

"A few races ago that could've been a puncture, and there's a very different story".

Mercedes have won the last four drivers' and constructors' championships but Wolff describes the fight with Ferrari as "the biggest challenge we have had so far".

"I just have the feeling that this is a hugely significant session" - David Croft.

"No, definitely not", he said, adding that this year's was no better: "We know we have less downforce this year than last year".
