Canada Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods

USA steel tariffs, which went into effect on June 1, are expected to be particularly painful for Canada.

"From Ontario steel to Quebec aluminum, from agriculture and the energy sector in the Prairies and the North, to forestry in British Columbia and fisheries in the Atlantic, Canadians get the job done - and build our communities along the way".

Canada announced billions of dollars in retaliatory tariffs against the USA on Friday, and the president signalled the trade rattling could continue.

NPR's Jackie Northam has this report. The tariffs will add 25 percent to the cost of imported steel products and 10 percent to the cost of imported aluminum products.

In comments filed with the US Commerce Department, GM said expansive tariffs could "lead to a smaller GM, a reduced presence at home and overseas for this iconic American company, and risk less - not more - US jobs".

Canada's Freeland called the idea of auto tariffs "absolutely absurd". But he says the whole situation is unnecessary and destructive.

Verstappen asked "what is going on?" and when advised by the team to "just overtake him" replied: "No". He's always asking for information, managing those tyres, and that's why they didn't blister up.

The president's decision to push back the NAFTA talks comes as the US and Canada have been engaged in a tit-for-tat trade dispute over Trump's tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. It's part of a tightly integrated cross-border trade network worth about $2 billion every day.

Donald Trump also congratulated Lopez Obrador on his electoral win, however, the US president also said in an interview this weekend he intends to hold off on signing a new NAFTA deal until after America's fall midterm elections.

According to statistics from Canada's Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Canada imported about $108 million in aluminum doors and windows from the U.S.in 2017.

Ken Neumann, national director of United Steelworkers Canada, said the tariffs are a step in the "right direction".

NORTHAM: There are concerns that the two neighbors could get embroiled in a trade war.

Responding to his remarks, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said "all negotiations are challenging" and Canada will continue to work on a new NAFTA deal. Together, we will keep building a country that makes us all proud. We are the biggest bilateral trading relationship in the world. Together, we will keep building a country where every Canadian - no matter where they're from, what religion they practice, or whom they love - has a real and fair chance to succeed. Fees imposed for all countries except Canada and Mexico.

"It's never done until the whole thing is done, but we have been making steady, consistent progress on rules of origin on cars", she said.
