In the Oval Office on Monday, he said the "four potential justices" he met that morning were "incredible people in so many different ways".

Collins discussed what she was looking for in a new justice, listing various attributes, then adding, "Most importantly of all, respect for precedent".

And as a reminder of the horrific lengths people have previously gone to in order to perform unsafe abortions when the practice has not been available, abortion rights activists have been sending Senator Collins coat hangers to remind her of what they say is at stake, The Cut reported.

But she is pro-choice and previously showed a willingness to go against the party, particularly in her vote against the repeal of the Affordable Care Act past year.

Collins spoke on ABC and CNN. Vice President Mike Pence can break a tie.
