Ms Ardern's pregnancy had prompted widespread debate about working mothers - some championing her for breaking new ground while others questioned her ability to work with a newborn.

The baby arrived at 4.45pm and weighs 3.315 kilograms.

Ardern posted a photo on her Instagram account showing her and partner Clarke Gayford with the baby at the hospital.

Ms Ardern's due date was June 17.

Congratulations quickly flooded in from around the world and across the political spectrum. Among them was a private message from the Queen, who Ms Ardern met in Britain earlier this year.

The public has generally been supportive of the popular prime minister.

"As a mum, my heart is bursting with pride and love for the prime minister and her whānau and wish them the very best for their future".

Mr Gayford will take care of the baby and will travel with Ms Ardern between their Auckland home and the capital, Wellington, as well on global engagements.

The former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark welcomed the birth in an email to the Associated Press and said New Zealanders had embraced Ardern's decisions.

I cried a little watching her", Markle said. "I'm going to take you away for the day and show you how this works'". I was jealous, I wish I'd been there, I wish it'd been me, but thank God he was there. "That upsets me somewhat".

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinta Ardern has announced that she has given birth to a healthy baby girl, becoming only the second world leader to do so while in office.

"Later on in the evening when I got the result of my test I thought, "oh my word, I'm going to have to call him back", she told Sitting Room Only. "We wish them all the best", he said.

In 1990, Benazir Bhutto gave birth to a daughter while serving as Pakistan's prime minister, a first for an elected world leader. By co-incidence, her daughter shares a birthday with Ms Bhutto.

Ardern announced the birth on Facebook. "We're all doing really well thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland City Hospital". After a six-week maternity leave, she plans to return to her job.

Ardern's partner, Clarke Gayford, will be a stay-at-home father.

"Attitudes have changed a lot on these issues since I first entered New Zealand politics, and that's a very good thing".

"I am not the first woman to multitask", Ardern said at the time.
