People treated after 'explosion' at Tube station in London

A police cordon surrounds the station and there was still a police presence coming up to 10pm.

A "minor explosion" has been reported at a London undergound station this evening.

"Southgate Tube station is now closed whilst officers respond", tweeted the British Transport Police.

British police said on Tuesday a "small number of people" were receiving medical treatment after what they described as a minor explosion likely caused by a battery malfunction at an underground station in north London.

"It appears at this stage that the cause of the explosion was a battery short circuit", police said, adding they were working to establish the full facts.

Fortunately reports now indicate that there have been no serious or life-threatening injuries as the authorities continue to control the incident which occurred today at 7.03pm.

Specialist police and paramedics rushed to Southgate station and commuters were warned to stay away from the area.

"Do not think this is fear mongering or fake news".

"Met officers remain at the scene along with colleagues from British Transport Police, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service". Officers are at the scene.
