Trump torpedoes G7 effort to ease trade spat, threatens auto tariffs

The Group of Seven leaders came to their summit in Canada braced for battle, and while everyone had smiles ready for the cameras, behind the scenes U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a "rant" and recriminations on trade to U.S. allies, leaving the once united club deeply divided.

In an extraordinary set of tweets aboard Air Force One, on its way to Singapore for next week's summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Trump lashed out just as Canada released the G-7's official communique.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he 'will not be pushed around.' Very dishonest & weak". The two-day summit in Canada has been marred by a tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with US trading partners furious over Mr. Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda.

"They do so much more business with us than we do with them ... the numbers are so astronomically against them - we win that war a thousand times out of a thousand". "And no subsidies. I even said, "no tariffs"!" He said he expressed to Trump "that Canadians did not take it lightly that the United States has moved forward with significant tariffs on our steel and aluminum industry".

What else did Trump have to say?

"We're like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing". "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!"

European officials at the summit were shocked by the idea, or dismissive, and Tusk, while admitting that it was hard to be surprised by Trump's pronouncements any more, said: "Let's leave the G7 as it is".

White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the characterisations by these officials of Trump's remarks or attention to the presentations.

I don't know where to go with this dog bites man metaphor but boy isn't this a insane world we live in!

Kim Jong-un personally indicated he's prepared to denuclearize: Pompeo
The U.S. wants to see the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of the North's weapons of mass destruction programs. President. "These programmes threaten our homeland, our allies and partners, and the broader non-proliferation regime".

"We're talking to all countries", he said, denouncing what he said were huge existing tariffs on United States exports around the world.

The bombshell tweet came after G7 nations appeared to have papered over the cracks in their alliance at the two-day summit in La Malbaie, Quebec, where Trump defiantly brandished his "America First" agenda.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau said that message was communicated clearly to Trump during his meetings at the G7 summit with fellow leaders, and in his face-to-face talk with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Mr Trump has long said the North American Free Trade Agreement has been a "disaster" for the U.S. and has insisted that it be renegotiated.

Trudeau said he told Trump directly that Canada 'particularly did not take lightly the fact that [the tariffs were] based on a national security reason'.

Canada wants a deal too, but the Trudeau government views the U.S.'s proposed five-year sunset clause as a non-starter.
