Congress facing immigration fight, tension on tariffs

British Prime Minister Theresa May is telling President Donald Trump that his decision to impose tariffs and steel and aluminum imports from the European Union was "unjustified and deeply disappointing".

"Doing anything around here is like pushing a major boulder up hill", Corker said.

The tariffs angered many Republicans, who fear they will touch off a trade war with American allies.

Joining Corker in introducing the plan was Democratic Sen.

Corker told reporters Wednesday that some Republicans are "fearful" of crossing Trump by signing onto the bill, making it more and more unlikely that the legislation gets through the Senate at all.

Last year, the Senate failed to come to an agreement by the funding deadline, so it spent months passing short-term spending bills and went through two government shutdowns before it finally passed a behemoth package known as an omnibus.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has announced that the Senate will be in session throughout much of August. The White House says the meeting focused on reducing the US trade deficit by having China buy more agricultural and energy products. It strictly prohibits the Pentagon from working with any entity that uses telecommunications equipment or services produced by Huawei Technologies Company or ZTE Corporation, which is facing trade law violations over selling sensitive technologies to U.S. adversaries.

"The US business and agriculture community is profoundly concerned about how newly imposed tariffs - and the inevitable foreign retaliation arriving in the next few weeks - will lead to lost American jobs", Bradley said in a statement. "And I don't think he's OK with anything that I've seen coming our way", McConnell added.

Corker's proposal would require the administration to submit to Congress any tariffs proposed on national security grounds, or Section 232, according to a source familiar with the bill.

Senate Republicans anxious about a possible trade war with USA allies Canada, Mexico and the European Union are pushing a plan to give Congress the final say over some trade actions. "NDAA is certainly one of them but it is open to amendment and we'll see what happens as it moves across the floor".

"We can't just be anti-Trump", Schumer said Wednesday on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time".

The ruling GOP majority of the Senate suddenly adjourned the Senate's session for the week on Thursday when it became clear that the Republicans could not obtain the 32 votes needed to pass a bill due to the continued absence of a Navy-bound senator that tips the otherwise equally divided chamber membership. Instead, he said, he favors trying to persuade the president change course.

The idea being pursued by Corker, Sen.

"This bill is not in my high priority list", Senator John DeFrancisco (R-Syracuse) said.

Currently, there are 10 Democrats up for re-election in states that Trump carried in 2016.

National Republican Senate Committee Chairman Cory Gardner of Colorado also hasn't backed the Corker plan, but he says tariffs could be bad politics for Republicans in the midterm election.

It's shaping up to be far from the typical summer slowdown, when legislating usually makes way for campaigning. "I believe there is some Democratic support for it", Schumer said. Heidi Heitkamp, a North Dakota Democrat in a tough re-election fight in 2018, said she was "very interested" in the proposal. "I think he's way too intelligent to get us into a trade war".
