President Donald Trump asserted his presidential power and escalated his efforts to discredit the special counsel Russian Federation probe Monday, declaring he has the "absolute right" to pardon himself and attacking the investigation as "totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL!"

In a tweet Monday, Trump weighed in on the question of whether he could pardon himself should the special counsel find he interfered in the investigation into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 election.

On Tuesday, the Senate's Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, also discouraged talk of a self-pardon by Trump.

Brian Kalt, a Michigan State law professor who has studied the issue of self-pardoning for 20 years, said he believes that the president can not pardon himself - but that there is a serious argument on the other side.

Nonetheless, Giuliani said he remains in touch with Mueller, and that there have been discussions about allowing investigators to question the president. He has grown frustrated over what he views as Republican impotence on Capitol Hill, Mueller's sprawling investigation and a coterie of aides at times riven by infighting.
