Danica Patrick ends racing career spinning out of the Indy 500

Danica Patrick ends racing career spinning out of the Indy 500

"I saw an opportunity, that's the time to go, but misjudged a little bit the tires". The 37-year-old Australian did just that in a dominant performance for Team Penske. The restart came with eight laps to go and Power trailing Oriol Servia, Wilson and Harvey. "I was wondering if I would ever win it".

"I've had so many wins, and so many poles, but everybody always talked about the 500".

"I honestly was beginning to believe I was never going to win this race", he admitted amid the victory lane celebration.

A frustrated Castroneves, who moved to Team Penske's sports auto team full time this season but returned to run the INDYCAR Grand Prix and Indy 500 this month, implored team owner Roger Penske to let him try again next May.

"Look, this closes the book for what he wanted to accomplish in INDYCAR: win a championship, now is tied for winning the most races as an Indy driver for the team (31) and the Indy 500 is something that he wanted to do from the very beginning", team owner Roger Penske said.

He's done it: Will Power wins the Indy500. "He hated ovals and now he loves them", said Carpenter, the local boy who had dominated the early stages of the race. "I don't know if we have a tampering rule in IndyCar, but congrats Will". But IndyCar has new cars, and the warm, humid weather made handling them even more complicated on the 2.5-mile oval.

Defending champion Takuma Sato of Japan collided with Jay Davison in Turn 3 of Lap 47 taking both of them out of the race. Instead, Patrick crashed just 67 laps into the race and was unable to finish, ending her final Indy 500 on a sour note. Ahead of Sunday's race, Patrick had a four lap average of about 228 miles per hour, earning her a top spot, starting in 7th at the beginning of the race. She decided long ago that the race that made her famous would be her last, and while she called the outcome disappointing, she also expressed appreciation for all that Indianapolis had given her. Power managed to hold off the field down the stretch to claim the victory. She had her best finish of third in the race in 2009.

He drives for Roger Penske and nothing matters more to the boss than winning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

When asked about her emotions on the incident and how it affected her, Patrick replied, "It's an entire career. When is the anthem?' But I had a lot of my people around me so I was in good spirits". "It just seemed to come around". ("Please Roger, can I come back", he pleaded with team owner Penske in his television interview.) Fellow Brazilian Tony Kanaan, another former victor who had the lead early in the afternoon, later lost control in turn two and also exited the race. Bourdais crashed a year after missing the race because of a harrowing, high-speed accident during qualifying, while Castroneves - who is now driving sports cars for Penske - was going for a record-tying fourth victory in the Indy 500 in a brief return to open-wheel racing.
