Harvey Weinstein hands himself in to police in NY

Once the most powerful man in Hollywood, disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein surrendered himself to NY police Friday morning, a watershed moment for the Me Too movement catalyzed last fall by the countless women who came forward with sexual harassment and assault allegations against him.

A judge agreed to release Weinstein on $1 million bail on Friday after he agreed to wear an electronic monitor that tracks his movements 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Mr Weinstein appeared pale and stood next to Mr Brafman while prosecutors described a bail agreement.

Weinstein's arraignment came two days after Palmer dropped a new single, "Mr. Weinstein Will See You Now", a searing critique of the once-powerful producer who's faced a wave a sexual harassment and assault allegations from dozens of women.

For months, criminal probes in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, New York City and London - as well as a federal investigation disclosed this week -had been investigating more than 20 allegations against him.

While Weinstein is the subject of an active investigation in NY, he's also under investigation for alleged sex crime in Los Angeles and London.

Prosecutors said on Friday that Mr Weinstein had been charged with two counts of rape and one count of a criminal sexual act involving two women, who were not identified. The D.A.'s office has said that it will continue to investigate other allegations.

In its statement, the New York Police Department thanked "these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice".

One of the cases was in NY, where Italian model Ambra Battilana accused Mr Weinstein of groping her in 2015.

She said: 'We got you, Harvey Weinstein, we got you'.

"I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him", McGowan told ABC television.

"Can't wait!" she wrote after the news broke, followed by, "Anyone know where I can get front row seats?!" I just sort of gave up.

Too many allegations lost to the statute of limitations.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office and police have been investigating Weinstein for months, coming under growing pressure from the Time's Up movement and Hollywood actresses to bring the disgraced producer to justice. If convicted on the most serious charges, Weinstein could face between five and 25 years in prison. Evans has hired noted lawyer Carrie Goldberg, who specializes in sexual violence, revenge porn, and stalking cases. That's common at this stage in a criminal case in NY.

Brafman said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations. They said his beaming face made them feel sick. "We believe that they are not factually supported by the evidence", Brafman said.

"There'd be times when you'd be kicked out of the suite at the Savoy or the Peninsula Hotel in L.A., and he would entertain", he said.

TRT World's Jon Brain has more from Washington on the development.

Anthony Bourdain, who is dating Argento, also reacted to Weinstein's arrest on social media.

Weinstein has repeatedly denied any instance of nonconsensual sex, though this is the first time formal charges have been handed down.

"My job is not to defend behaviour", he said. "This wasn't a normal confidentiality agreement".

"We intend to move very quickly to dismiss these charges. This was a deeply, personally binding agreement".

The powerful mogul became an outcast last fall after investigations from the NY Times and the New Yorker revealed a history of intimidating women and allegations of sexual assault.

The case was then adjourned until 30 July.
