This is accomplished only with the assistance of loyal volunteers to whom we owe a great deal of gratitude. And while giving back to the extent they deserve is impossible, celebrating their memory and honoring their most selfless deeds offers a start.

Originally, Memorial Day only honored those who lost their lives while fighting in the Civil War, but it gradually evolved into honoring all United States military personnel who have lost their lives in battle.

God Bless our fallen, their families, and the men and women in uniform all over the world.

Featured speaker at the program Saturday will be state Sen. Jake will be the fourteenth in a series of what we have come to call our "Memorial Day Speakers Homecoming: A tradition of honoring our own".

The fourth annual festival covers the area along Southwest Boulevard between Union Avenue and 39th Street, including the Route 66 Village and the campus of Webster High School. SSG Hurley is now serving with the Iowa National Guard and works as a Human Resources NCO for the 67th Troop Command. The Army and Marines will have military vehicles for their transportation.

Effingham County Cultural Center and Museum Association will host a display of military history.

At 8 a.m., a procession will gather at the VFW hall on Caledonia Street to begin a series of brief wreath laying ceremonies at each of the official monuments. The events are free and open to the public. Seeing the parade is free; You do not need a ticket. The law also declared Memorial Day as a federal holiday.

The Carteret County Veterans Services Office has scheduled its Service of Remembrance at the Carteret County Veterans Memorial at Courthouse Square in Beaufort. Organ music by Sara Drinane 11 1 p.m. Saturday, Monday; 11:30 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Bishop McNamara High School will replant the Ryan Beaupre Memorial Tree at 8:30 a.m. Monday before the start of the annual Ken Klipp Classic 5K run.

The event will begin with the presentation of colors followed by the national anthem, Pledge of Allegiance and the reading of patriotic poems. Membership certificates will be given to Dale Williams for 70 years and to George Steinbronn and Leon Treptow for 50 years of continuous membership. Twenty-one gun salute and taps will be performed.

Although Memorial Day weekend is considered the unofficial beginning of the summer vacation season, it's rooted in a solemn observation: Honoring America's fallen heroes. In case of rain, services will be held at the Methodist Church. Gen. Thomas Luczynski, who trained and served as an Airborne Ranger and adviser in Vietnam. Mr. Bowden's address will be "A Century of Service". A barbecue lunch will be served after the ceremony.

Members of Post 781 are asked to meet at the post home at 10 a.m. Schedule: 10:30 a.m., VFW Post 7918 Memorial, Slocum Township; 11 a.m., St. Matins in the Field Church (Stone Church); 11:30 a.m., St. Mary's Cemetery, Dorrance Township; Noon, Emmanuel Church, end of Aberdeen Road; 12:30 p.m., Albert Cemetery, Church Road; 1 p.m., Mountain Post 781 Memorial. A meal will be served following the service at the Edgewood Legion. Master of Ceremonies Deon Ford, commander of Arcade-Phalen American Legion Post 577 in St. Paul. Major Gossett is stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The public is encouraged to attend.
