Assad meets Putin in Sochi on future peace talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin met the Syrian regime's Bashar al-Assad in the Russian resort city of Sochi on Thursday, highlighting the importance of facilitating the "resumption of a full-fledged political process", according to the Kremlin.

"With the start of the political process in its most active phase, foreign armed forces will withdraw from Syrian territory", Mr Putin said, without specifying which foreign forces.

Assad previously visited Russia and met with Putin in November 2017 and October 2015, and Putin traveled to the Russian air base in Syria last December to announce a scale-back of the Russian military presence there.

The two leaders discussed the need to strengthen the work on rendering of humanitarian aid to Syrians and economistsview Syria.

Putin also congratulated Assad on the "successes of the Syrian government's army in the fight against terrorist groups".

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since 2011 when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Russia, Iran and Turkey have been attempting to resolve the conflict in the talks that started a year ago in Astana in competition with a USA and UN-backed Geneva initiative. "But with you and other partners and friends, we will continue to make strong progress in the peace process", Mr Assad was quoted as saying in the statement. "Owing to efforts taken by your military over the recent time, major moves have been made towards the further strengthening of the constituted authority", the Russian leader told his Syrian counterpart.

Assad said he also discussed with Putin economic cooperation and growing investments by Russian companies in Syria.

Syria's conflict began with mass protests against the Assad family's decades-long rule.

"The talks were quite detailed", Peskov said.
