Man Utd, Arsenal men among best stars to miss out

Man Utd, Arsenal men among best stars to miss out

England players, pundits and other figures from the football world have posted their reactions to Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The majority of the squad picked for Russian Federation 2018 have already jumped on social media to share their emotions, with a number posting heart-warming messages ahead of the tournament.

"Congrats to these two for making the @England World Cup squad", he wrote, "don't look so shocked Trent, you deserve it!" They will train with the squad ahead of the tournament.

The 28-year-old has 19 caps and started four of the last eight internationals, although missed out in the last two games having pulled out of the squad through injury.

However, don't fall for the suggestion that this is all part of a masterplan created to prepare for Qatar 2022, because football doesn't work like that.

Cahill, Sterling, Jones and Henderson are the only players to have retained their places from the 2014 World Cup.

"We have a lot of energy and athleticism in the team", Southgate said, "but players that are equally comfortable in possession of the ball and I think people can see the style of play we've been looking to develop".

It is hard to question any of his selections.

"The first call up for Trent Alexander-Arnold is well deserved".

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland, Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope.

Defensively, there are good options rather than great ones.

For Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, there was frustration as he was left out of the squad, but he took the snub in his stride. Physically, he also struggles to compete against the most accomplished teams and players.

England manager Gareth Southgate has made a decision to opt for young players as he announced the 23-man World Cup squad with several notable absentees.

Injuries meant their Reds teammates Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez were unavailable for selection.

However, a knee problem ruled him out of England's March friendlies against Holland and Italy and a final chance to impress Southgate, who plumped for Ruben Loftus-Cheek alongside his regular midfielders after the Chelsea youngster impressed on loan at Crystal Palace.

As expected, the likes of Harry Kane, who scored 30 Premier League goals for Tottenham Hotspur this season, Dele Alli, Jamie Vardy, Reheem Sterling, Gary Cahill and Kyle Walker are all included.
