#BREAKING: Shooting at Dixon High School; one in custody

The male was believed to be a 19-year-old former student at the school, Lee County Sheriff John Simonton told Sauk Valley Media. Dixon city officials say a preliminary investigation shows the suspect shot at a resource police officer, the officer returned fire and the suspect was struck.

Chief Howell says the school resource officer saved lives when he confronted the armed former student. The shooter was taken into custody.

Howell says the former student fired several shots near the school gymnasium and ran away when the officer confronted him.

Authorities haven't provided the gunman's name.

All schools in Dixon, a small city about 100 miles (160 km) west of Chicago, were placed on lockdown, but Langloss said police believe the suspect acted alone and that there was no further threat.

No students or staff were armed during the shootout, with all public schools in the area now on lockdown.

The incident occurred in the gym, where seniors were gathered for graduation practice, City Administrator Danny Langloss said. It is unclear whether the incident took place inside the school or outside the building.
