Trump says Melania "doing really well" after procedure

Trump says Melania

First Lady Melania Trump had surgery on Monday morning for what aides called a "benign" kidney condition.

Mrs. Trump, who has been gradually raising her profile as first lady, recently hosted her first state dinner and launched a public awareness campaign to help children. President Donald Trump visited her later Monday and tweeted that the procedure was "successful" and that his wife was in "good spirits".

The procedure was "long-planned", according to Vice President Mike Pence, who stood in for Trump at a Monday night event in Washington, DC, celebrating Israel's 70 years of independence. Doctors do that with an embolisation - snaking a catheter into the blood vessels of the kidney to find the right one and block it. The White House said the procedure was "successful" and there were no complications.

The White House withheld additional information about the first lady's condition, citing her right to privacy. "Will be leaving hospital in 2 or 3 days", Trump tweeted.

Senate Democrats also criticized the president for appearing to give in to Chinese pressure on the ZTE sanctions. The widening trade dispute between the world's two biggest economies has taken a toll on both sides.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters said of the President's Tuesday trip to visit his wife, "This evening the President visited the First Lady at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Thank you to all of the well-wishers!" he wrote on Twitter.

The hospitalization comes as Melania Trump, 48, has taken a higher-profile role in the White House in recent weeks. Her spokeswoman had said in a statement Monday that the first lady was likely to remain hospitalised for "the duration of the week".

He also explained that the First Lady would be spending time in the hospital to recover from the procedure and remain under hospital eyes for a few days, even though no signs were shown that it was an emergency of any sorts.

Mrs. Trump unveiled her official policy platform "Be Best" last week.
