Sword-wielding men attack Sumatra police station

According to reports from journalists at the scene, who were covering another story right before the attack, a white Toyota Avanza smashed into the outer fence of the police headquarters.

Attack comes after multiple bombings in Surabaya in the past week.

Police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal said the militants fired rampant shots at the police building located on Sudirman street in Pekanbaru, the Riau provincial capital at 9 am Jakarta time (0200 GMT).

Wasisto said the driver has been apprehended and was now being detained at Riau Police Precinct.

"Two police officers were wounded in the arms and head by the sharp weapons", Sunarto told Detik.

TV footage showed one man lying on the ground with a long sword next to his body and an armoured auto stationed outside the police station.

Earlier, an internal police report said one of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body.

Police responded by shooting the alleged attackers.

The perpetrators have not been identified or a motive determined.
