One of California's top high schools is in Fresno, latest ranking shows

Of those higher ranking: 13 are NYC Public Schools, 2 are in Westchester County, 1 on Long Island.

That means 23.4 percent of Florida high schools exceeded expectations on math and reading tests; had minority and low-income students surpass the state average among those groups; did not have graduation rates below 80 percent and had high pass rates on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. In addition to its top spot for the state, Maeser ranked as No. 698 among the nation's public schools.

"This recognition is validation of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by our stakeholders on a daily basis", said Coy Samons, superintendent of the Murray Independent School District.

Other area high schools to receive a bronze rating which were not among the top 71 schools in Kentucky were Fulton County and Hickman County, Fulton County had a 100 percent graduation rate, while Hickman County had an 89 percent graduation rate. Gautier's 90 percent graduation rate topped Ocean Springs' 87 percent, but Gautier only received a 13.4 CRI. "The student body makeup is 50 percent male and 50 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 12 percent".

"With this in mind, we define a "best" high school as one that best serves all of its students", he said in a statement.

Prairie Grove High School moved up to fourth from last year's rank of seventh in the state. The first three steps review graduation rates and state proficiency tests for math and reading, while the fourth reviews how students fared on advanced placement and worldwide baccalaureate exams, which measure students preparedness for college level work.
