White House confirms Trump to skip Jerusalem embassy opening

"I thank President Trump or making this historic moment come to fruition", he said in a statement released by his office.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday announced the designation of a presidential delegation to Israel to attend the opening of the U.S. embassy.

In preparation, workers began installing road signs pointing to the embassy in the city Trump has recognized as Israel's capital.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was not on the list.

Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its "united" capital, and its annexation of East Jerusalem effectively put the entire city under de-facto Israeli control.

Trump sparked global outcry when he unilaterally recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and vowed to relocate Washington's embassy to the city.

Barkat personally affixed the first of several new road signs pointing to the location of the new embassy, which is primarily comprised of the complex formerly utilized as the USA consulate in Jerusalem.

Still, local residents are excited about the new move. The Palestinians seek the eastern sector as capital of their hoped-for state.

Since the creation of the Jewish state it has not recognised Jerusalem as its capital and considers that the final status of the city must be negotiated with the Palestinians.

Mayor Nir Barkat posed atop a ladder as the first sign went up as part of ongoing celebrations for Jerusalem Day, which falls on May 13 this year.

The Palestinian authorities have called on the diplomatic corps, worldwide non-governmental organizations and religious authorities to boycott the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.

If Trump attended the ceremony, it might have amplified protests that are expected to break out around the opening.
