This is America: the theories behind Childish Gambino's satirical masterpiece

He followed up the SNL performances by unleashing a thought-provoking music video for "This Is America" which has been trending on Twitter since its release. Gambino was the week's celebrity guest host when he released the new music video which has garnered 15 million views to date. The video is a representation of the current climate in America where people are asserting Black lives matters while combatting police violence and where handguns are arguably treated with more respect than Black bodies.

Director, actor, producer and musician Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, has given his chart-topping new music video a distinctly South African twist, performing the local dance, "Gwara Gwara". The visual served the palpable reality of being black in America, with gun violence and police brutality as the focal point.

After a revisiting the record a few times, we've pinpointed some of the lines in which Gambino is assisted. His gunning down of the gospel choir singing the lyric suggests that he's exhausted of the pressure to accumulate wealth, to be performatively black, and stay spiritually uplifted in an age of gun violence.

"This Is America" features background vocals from Young Thug, 21 Savage, Quavo, Rae Sremmurd's Slim Jxmmi, and BlocBoy JB.

The super-busy star performed two songs as Childish Gambino on SNL, the other fittingly entitled "Saturday". The chaos doesn't seem to affect him until the end when he's chased out.

The new single marks Glover's first new foray into music since his Grammy-nominated 2016 album Awaken, My Love!

Glover originally debuted both of his songs on "Saturday Night Live" but the music video is what's sticking in people's minds today.
