Two Florida sheriff's deputies shot dead by gunman

According to the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office, the deputies were shot and killed in front of a Chinese restaurant in downtown Trenton around 3 p.m.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office and their citizens over the tragic loss of two deputies".

Sgt. Noel Ramirez (l.), 29, and deputy Taylor Lindsey (r.), 25, were killed by a gunman outside of a Chinese restaurant on April 19, 2018.

There was no altercation and no one else was injured, Alachua County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Brett Rhodenizer told the Daily News.

Schultz said he rushed to the scene as soon as he heard about the shooting.

According to the department's website, there are 14 full-time deputies in the patrol division.

Trenton is in northern Florida, about 35 miles west of Gainesville.

Developing story - more to come.

Other than being cited for making an improper turn back in 2012, Highnote has nothing on his record in Gilchrist County.

"What do you expect happens when you demonize law enforcement, to the extent that its been demonized, every type of hate, every type of put down that you can think of", Sheriff Schultz said.

Schultz made contact with the officers' families Thursday and said, "Sgt. Ramirez and Deputy Lindsey were the best of the best".

Schultz wouldn't say how the suspect died, adding that state law enforcement officials were investigating. With over seven years' total law enforcement experience, Noel served at both the Williston Police Department and the Levy County Sheriff's Office before joining the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office in 2016. "People will want to know why, and we may never have an answer for them", he added. Ramirez was married with two children, and Lindsey had a girlfriend. "They're god fearing and they loved what they did".

Schultz described them as "men of integrity, men of loyalty".

The shooter was identified as a man from a small town just up the road from the restaurant, and his motive wasn't immediately known, but the sheriff blamed Thursday's killings on hatred toward law enforcement.

"... The Citrus County Sheriff's Office family will honor these two men by doing our jobs and keeping you safe", a CCSO news release states.

President Donald Trump tweeted about the shooting offering his condolences to the sheriff's office and families of the slain officers. "We will also steadfastly remain vigilant and keep a special place in our hearts for the men and women of Gilchrist County who wear the badge so proudly".

A construction worker who witnessed the shooting said that Highnote emerged from the restaurant "calm as can be", WFLA reported.
