Amazon has sold Prime memberships to a hundred million of us

The letter goes on to give an update on many aspects of Amazon's business, including the revelation that Amazon has more than 100 million Prime members worldwide, the first time the company has disclosed that number.

The Seattle e-commerce giant has reported for the past few years the revenue it garnered through "subscription services", providing an indication of its Prime sales without specifying the number of members.

Prime members pay a monthly fee of $12.99 or an annual fee of $99, and receive access to free two-day shipping, free same-day delivery and Prime Video streaming, among other program benefits. Amazon shipped more than 5 billion items through Prime in 2017, according to the letter.

Amazon shares rose 1.5% in after-hours trading.

Prime isn't the largest paid internet service, however. We expanded Prime to Mexico, Singapore, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, and introduced Business Prime Shipping in the USA and Germany. Netflix, by comparison, has 125 million subscribers.

Still, some are wary of Prime membership acting like a blinder that prevents shoppers from checking prices elsewhere and shapes consumer habits.

Previous estimates had pegged Amazon's Prime membership at around 90 million, but this number had not been confirmed by the company.

"It would make flawless sense to us that there would be over 100 million global members, based not only on that number but everything we've seen since then", Levin said.

"13 years post-launch, we have exceeded 100 million paid Prime members globally", Bezos wrote.

Amazon Prime is still growing.
