Pence: NAFTA deal could be reached in several weeks

The meeting between Pence and Trudeau was largely overshadowed by those strikes, as the two condemned the Syrian government's alleged use of chemical weapons on April 7 that killed at least 40 people and injured hundreds more.

While the crisis in Syria was front and centre, Trudeau and Pence expressed optimism about the state of NAFTA negotiations, the results of which will have dramatic ramifications for the USA and Canada.

A global chemical warfare watchdog group says its fact-finding mission to Syria will go ahead even after the USA -led airstrikes.

Pence's team finally got wind of the controversy and after his plane landed, the vice president called Trump to plead Lerner's case.

Trump often improvises his remarks and is known for bold declarations in person and on his Twitter account. Pence, for his part, told Trudeau that the US was "encouraged" by the progress and hopeful it can lead to "more fair and reciprocal trade".

Unlike past appearances at global summits, the vice president had to dive into the packed agenda on short notice.

He also stressed that the president made clear the "prepared to sustain this effort".

Pence said they simply had a difference of opinion and some issues were "set aside, for a later date".

During his meeting with Pence, Pena Nieto urged for the relationship between Mexico and the United States to be based on "mutual respect".

A new North American free trade deal appeared closer to reality on Saturday, after U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence became the latest Trump administration official to suggest an agreement could be reached within a matter of weeks. He warned that if it could not be overhauled to better protect USA interests, Washington would pull out of the pact.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was barred from attending the summit over his plans to hold a presidential election that the opposition is boycotting and that many foreign governments consider a sham.

Trump wasn't happy with Pence's appointment of Jon Lerner because he believed he was part of the "Never Trump" movement when working on negative ads against him for "Club for Growth" during the GOP primaries, sources told Axios.

Pence left Peru on Saturday evening and arrived home in Washington early Sunday.
