Trump Skips South American Summit to Focus on Syria

Trump's new national security adviser, John Bolton, advocated that Trump stay in Washington in the aftermath of the attack, said one of the officials.

On Monday, President Trump said the United States would respond in 24-48 hours to the latest suspected chemical weapons strike in Syria.

"At the president's request, the vice-president will travel in his stead".

'President Trump will not attend the 8th Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru, nor will he travel to Bogota, Colombia, as he was originally scheduled, ' White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement on Tuesday.

This will be the second trip to the region for Vice President Mike Pence.

The reason that Trump has decided to make this change and cancel his trip in favour of handling the U.S. response to the escalating crisis in Syria was that he needs "to monitor developments around the world" as other national leaders respond to the situation. It would been Trump's first visit to Latin America as president. And it will be met forcefully.

Pence travelled to Latin America in August 2017, visiting Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Panama.
