Google's Android Wear May Soon be Rebranded as Wear OS

It seemingly wanted to ditch the association of Android with the name of its watch specific interface.

Digital Trends has the scoop on the changes that Google appears to be mulling over. The fact that recent Wear devices also work with iOS devices could have played a part in the revamp. Recently its contact-less payment service goes by the name Google Pay, not Android Pay. After all, one can use Android Wear watches with iPhones too.

Android Wear used to be my personal favorite wearable OS, and I religiously wore the Samsung Gear Live, Moto 360, and Huawei Watch. According to a notification received by a Reddit user (via Android Police) and additional commentary from 9to5Google, the Mountain View company might be prepping a refresh of the OS with a new name and new logo.

Android Wear has been around for a while now, but it hasn't picked up the pace as Google would have wanted.

Last week, Google released the first developer preview of its next version of operating system "Android P" which the company said was mostly focused on the changes that will affect developers and might not have significant user interface (UI) adjustments.

Keep in mind, Google is no stranger to rebrands at the moment.

Maybe for those gadget enthusiasts who didn't prefer the "A-word" or those buyers who previously thought that they needed an Android phone. While Android Wear is technically Android, it could be that Google wants the name to be more inclusive for its compatibility with other mobile operating systems. This name changer can be a lack of faith or a leap of faith.
