Theni forest fire: Nine people charred to death and several others critical

NDTV reported that 39 people, mostly students, were trapped in the forest fire, while The Indian Express reported that at least 65 people were trapped before 15 were rescued, of whom five were seriously injured.

Thirty of the trekkers, mostly students, have been rescued and were rushed to a government hospital. Their condition is stable. According to the police, a total of 30 students were stranded in the hill station.

The Collector added that the rescue of others struck in the area has become very hard due lack of adequate lighting facilities. Those with burn injuries should heal fast. Some have suffered minor burns while some major.

"Among those rescued, six persons are very critical".

He said that the group of trekkers stayed at a tea estate and were trapped in the forest fire when they were returning. The Theni Collector has informed me that ambulances with doctors are positioned downhill to render all medical aid for the girls. She said during the aerial survey, the trekkers had signalled their location to the chopper crew with torchlights. Meanwhile a team of ministers led by deputy chief minister O.Panneerselvam met the injured at the Bodinayakkanur hospital and consoled them.

Singhvi also alleged that the CBI purposefully did not filed reply to the bail petition so that he could be kept in custody. The CBI argued that it needed further custody of Karti as he was non-cooperative and had not answered all questions.

"We will provide the necessary security to people who go on treks and inform in advance", OPS said.

The Air Force has been pressed into service for rescue operations.

It is also not known whether the group has trekking experts who know the topography and other characteristics of the different hills and who can guide trekkers.

District Superintendent of Police V. Baskaran and reveune and forest officials were taking steps to rescue the students from the trapped site. Rescue operations are on with a search party reaching the site of the fire. Sitharaman said she was responding to a request from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Palaniswami for the rescue efforts.
