Kelly Rowland, Ciara, Katy Perry, Cher & More Celebrate International Women's Day

On Thursday, all over the world, women were celebrated, empowered, and supported on International Women's Day. IWD and these movements have a shared agenda of removing the barriers that hold women back, and making sure they are treated with respect and equality in every situation, in every corner of the world.

I rise in this Honorable House today, as Minister with the portfolio of Gender Affairs, to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of women and girls locally and internationally. This year's theme is "Press for Progress".

The government must set a timeline for the Gender Equality Act to show firm commitment in enacting the law. If you're out there marching already, great!

"We're focusing on trafficking in Asia, we're focusing on cultural practices that are harmful to women in Africa, such as child marriage and female genital mutilation, we are focusing on domestic violence and sexual violence in Latin America, and equal pay", says Mlambo-Ngcuka. But the day still retains the essence of its Marxist roots by encouraging women to think of themselves as a homogenous class with discrete common interests, in opposition to men's. Here in Jordan, equality between men and women means or should mean equal number of PMs in the legislature and not just few of them as decorative flowers to please, or rather deceive, the eye.

"It is astounding that we're not there yet, but we're not", she added. Next month, they will host the WOW - Women of the World - one day Festival.

Over the past year, my Administration has championed the creation of worldwide initiatives to promote women's economic empowerment.

Similar to the LEED certification for environmentally-friendly building design, consumers will then be able to identify companies certified as supportive of gender equality.

"Increasing the level of women participation in politics and creating an enabling environment for women to participate in politics by economic empowerment and adequate education of women for political participation" Abiola Akiode, head of WARDC said. "I've heard about boys saying at the theatre, I didn't know women could be generals".

The two main trade unions supported half-day stoppages and estimated that almost 6 million people took part. "And this is the opportunity for us to come together, not only to celebrate women and girls, but to take a really hard look at those issues, and why we haven't achieved gender equity yet".
