Delhi High Court grants Karti protection from arrest

Mehta said the CBI raided an earlier unknown office of Advantage Strategic in Chennai on Wednesday and Thursday and "recovered a lot of documents proving Karti Chidambaram was directly associated with it".

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Karti, lashed out at the CBI saying that the agency was keeping Karti in a cell with guards playing cards till late night, which led to his blood pressure shooting up.

The court said that if the trial court decides to grant bail to Karti Chidambaram in the CBI case, then it may impose conditions such as the accused shall appear before the ED as and when called for the investigation and cooperate in the probe.

The CBI argued that it needed further custody of Karti as he was non-cooperative and had not answered all questions. Singhvi also alleged that the CBI purposefully did not filed reply to the bail petition so that he could be kept in custody.

The agency is now preparing to confront Karti with his chartered account and co-accused S. Bhaskararaman, who is lodged in Tihar jail in Delhi.

Before commencing the proceedings on Karti, the court extended the judicial custody of his CA, S Bhaskararaman, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in the case, till 22 March.

The Delhi High Court on Friday gave Congress leader P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram interim protection from being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the INX Media money laundering case.

The high court order failed to effectively bring any relief to Karti, who has been in CBI custody for the last nine days for questioning since his arrest from Chennai Airport on February 28.

The ASG said that new incriminating materials have been found and Karti has to be confronted with them.

After hearing the arguments, the court extended the custody of Karti by three more days till March 12. It impleaded the Centre as a necessary party in the case as in the original plea Karti had only made ED a party.

"Now is this what the Supreme Court is going to do?" It had registered an ECIR, the ED's equivalent of an FIR, against the accused named in the CBI complaint. These included Karti Chidambaram, INX Media and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.

He said he was only referring to them as persons whose statements have been recorded by the agencies in connection with the FIPB clearance granted to INX Media when P Chidambaram was the Union finance minister in 2007.
