Madrid beaten without Ronaldo

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said his side did not deserve to lose after a stoppage-time goal saw them go down to a 1-0 defeat at Espanyol on Tuesday night.

A much-changed Real team struggled to create chances and looked destined to play out a goalless draw with the Catalan side before Gerard Moreno scored a 93rd minute victor to hand the visitors their fifth league defeat of the season. Real, meanwhile, will fall 17 points behind leaders Barcelona if the Catalans overcome Las Palmas on Thursday. We dropped further back for some spells in the second half but you've got to accept these tough times.

The Champions League represents Madrid's best chance to end the campaign with another trophy, with the holders taking a 3-1 first-leg lead to France on March 6 in their last-16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid entertain Getafe on the weekend before facing the French giants in the return leg at Paris.

Shahbaz Sharif elected interim chief of PML-N
In the meeting, Nawaz proposed the name of Shahbaz for the party's interim president which was unanimously approved by the CWC. Shahbaz Sharif's selection as permanent president of the PML-N will be made during the General Council meeting on March 6.

Madrid had outscored opponents 20-7 in its five-game winning streak.

Although key players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos were rested for the game, the reigning champions were stunned by a Gerard Moreno's injury-time volley.

Gareth Bale, who started as a lone striker up front, had the first chance for Madrid in the ninth minute with a header from just inside the box but Diego Lopez produced a fine save to deny the Welshman. And with La Liga lost long ago, Madrid lacked the urgency and the spark to dig out a win they would surely have managed last term. It had already beaten Atletico 1-0 at home and drawn Barcelona 1-1 in the league. But Zidane's XI still should have had enough quality to beat an Espanyol side with a awful record against Madrid in recent seasons.

However, Espanyol were not going to settle for a point. We always look to win, and even worse, we conceded in the last minute. "This result restores our confidence after a series of poor results".
