Another new tier, Beyond by Airbnb, will offer customised luxurious trips when it launches in the spring.

"We have a lot more than shared rooms, private rooms and entire homes", he said, announcing new categories for vacation homes, boutique hotel rooms, B&Bs and "uniques", a classification that includes tree-houses, boats, yurts, igloos and a 30ft beagle-shaped house called Sweet Willy.

The new search functions will make it much easier to find what you need - as there's a colossal 3.5 million properties on Airbnb.

Airbnb is launching a new product in Chicago and a dozen other cities that will feature only listings that meet higher standards set by the home rental company. The company has been forced to slash its listings in certain popular cities as part of its concessions to regulators. It's a new tier that's "intended for guests looking for lovely homes" and "exceptional hosts", according to the company.

The company is celebrating its 10-year anniversary and unveiled their next venture at press conference today in San Francisco - they're now targeting the luxury market.

Brian described these features - which are still in development - as "the passport to a new travel lifestyle".

AIRBNB is a good option for a quirky stay when you're on holiday and want to escape identikit hotel rooms - and often at bargain prices. At the same time, it'll have new property listing categories for more unusual locations, including "Boutique" and "Unique Space". Airbnb is expected to make a public initial offering from 2019. Chesky asked. Consider the some 65,000 listings in Paris. "If we are going to have benefits for hosts, we should have benefits for guests across the travel journey", Chesky said.

Airbnb is also shifting more focus on its guests. There are now 24,000 hotel rooms already listed on Airbnb, up 520% from a year ago. For a hotel owner, it's an attractive proposition. "We even test the Wi-Fi", Chesky said.

"That is the lion laying down with the lamb", Harteveldt said.

Airbnb isn't gunning for Hilton or other large chains; it's actually becoming an online travel agency (OTA) like Expedia or Priceline.

But whether Airbnb can succeed in that segment remains to be seen. It starts with 2,000 homes that are now available to book. Airbnb says hosts of the properties must have a 4.8 out of 5-star rating or higher. Partially retired, Barefoot rents out a floor of his home in Durham, North Carolina, to supplement his income.
