New Orleans gets 14 nods on James Beard semifinalists list

Chez Panisse is the lone East Bay restaurant to have taken home James Beard awards, including for outstanding restaurant, outstanding chef, and outstanding pastry chef.

Central Florida chefs have been represented in the James Beard Foundation awards in the past.

The James Beard Foundation winners will be announced and receive their medals at a gala in May. The foundation will narrow the nominees for its restaurant and chef awards to a smaller group of finalists on March 14.

L'Etoile's Tory Miller was up for an award in the overall "Outstanding Chef" category in 2016, but didn't make it into the final five.

This year's roundup of local nominees is similar to last year's early contenders, joined by a number of newcomers in different categories. ChoLon and Williams & Graham have also made the list for Best New Restaurant and Outstanding Beverage Program, respectively.

2018 marks the third-straight year for Bluebeard's Abbi Merriss being named Best Chefs in America semifinalist. Houston garnered the most nominations with 11, four of which were in the Best Chef: Southwest category.

Brigtsen's Restaurant was again nominated this year for the Outstanding Service award.

A California native, Anderson served as executive chef at the Copper Beech Inn in the Ivoryton section of Essex for several years.

Tyler Anderson, the chef-owner of Millwright's in Simsbury and co-owner of The Cook and the Bear in West Hartford, has been nominated for the fifth straight year.

With three consecutive James Beard nods, Komori is the rock star of Idaho's chef world. Eligible restaurants must have been in operation 10 or more consecutive years. Paul Bartolotta won Best Chef while he worked at Spiaggia in Chicago in 1994 and later, at Bartolotta's Ristorante di Mare in Las Vegas in 2009.
