Loch, who also won gold with the German relay team in Sochi, still stands a chance of becoming the first luger to win four Olympic gold medals as a member of the relay team in Pyeongchang.

Chris Mazdzer celebrates winning the silver medal in the luge men's singles at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChnang 2018 on February 11, 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Halfway through the four-round event, Mazdzer was in fourth place, with a total time of 1:35.517 - just one one-thousandth of a second behind Roman Repilov, Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation, but it would have been enough to keep him off the medal stand.

Loch's loss translated into big gains for Mazdzer and Gleirscher, who beat out the American by just over two hundredths of a second to become the first Austrian to win the event in five decades. Germany's Felix Loch faltered on his final run, allowing Austria's David Gleirscher to move from second into first place and Chris Mazdzer from fourth to second. The US has medaled in doubles luge four times; the last came in 2002 in Salt Lake City.

Team USA is starting to gain momentum in the medal hunt at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Wearing bib No. 13, the 29-year-old Mazdzer won a silver medal in men's luge at a frigid (12ºF) Alpensia Sliding Centre Sunday night.

A clean run for Loch nearly guaranteed a medal, and yet, amazingly, he made a slight but hugely significant error that saw him slump to fifth in the overall standings. His solid final run then shored up his claim on silver.

He finished in fourth place after two runs, finishing one one-thousandth outside of the top contenders.
