Snowboarders Parrot and McMorris Capture Silver and Bronze at Pyeongchang Olympics

The two Canadians finished behind 17-year-old American Redmond Gerard, who gave the US its first gold of 2018 with a score of 87.16.

American Redmond Gerard won the men's snowboard slopestyle of 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games at Phoenix Snow Park here on Sunday.

Not only did McMorris beat the odds and return to competition after life-threatening injuries, but he and teammate Max Parrot earned Team Canada its first medals of the PyeongChang games.

McMorris's remarkable feat after cheating death did not go unnoticed by U.S. ski "queen" Lindsey Vonn, who tweeted a split photo, one half of the Canadian in a hospital bed with numerous tubes attached to him and the other showing him smiling and a superimposed bronze medal. Dufour-Lapointe had a strong final run as she tried to become the first woman to defend an Olympic mogul title, but she was edged out of top spot by France's Perrine Laffont.

Bloemen, the world-record holder in the distance, didn't feel he had his best performance Sunday but said he gave it everything he had. They will be joined in the 12-man final by Sebastien Toutant, who qualified with a 78.01 in Saturday's morning heat, and by Tyler Nicholson, who fell nearly immediately in the first Olympic run of his life but bounced back with a 79.21 in his second run to get through to Sunday.

The 24-year-old suffered fractures to his jaw, left arm, pelvis and ribs and sustained a ruptured spleen and collapsed left lung after a backcountry snowboarding accident in Whistler.

These thoughts were still present after Sunday's final as McMorris said he was just pleased to be healthy and riding once again.

What followed was an arduous recovery process, including 10 days in the hospital, a liquid diet that lasted six weeks and hours of daily physical therapy.

"I said to myself, 'Listen Max, you fell two straight times". - Canadian ice dancer Scott Moir on Canada's chances for gold in the figure skating team event.

The women's slopestyle qualification is set for Monday afternoon. "I was just so frustrated and so scared for my second run, because imagine if that happened for my second run?"

Redmond Gerard of the United States was adjudged to be the best in men's slopestyle on Saturday.
